The next day, Holly walked into the office and found Johnny at his desk. “I’m early. You’re just insane! How long have you been here . . . or have you left since we spoke with Paschal?”

Johnny smiled but didn’t look up. “I went home, but I was working there, too.”

“Meng?”

“Damn right. Paschal wasn’t kidding. This guy is like a dust storm. When he is active, he’s deadly, and when he’s not, he’s in the wind without a single fucking trace.”

“Got anyone else on it?” Holly asked.

“Not on my end. I was encouraged to let Paschal work his magic with what Worth called ‘other resources,’ so I’m sticking to my own efforts.”

“Good plan. Paschal is one of the best. Rumor is, he has ties in every federal agency, even the ones that don’t exist.” Holly smiled.

“I’ll take help from any source to bring this one home.” Johnny looked at the murder board. “I can’t wait to put this case down.”

Holly picked up her backpack from the half wall of Johnny’s cubicle. “You know, somehow I believe you have the smarts to get it done.” Johnny looked up at her. “You’ve certainly moved the needle farther than anyone else,” she said. Johnny sat a bit taller in his chair. The reality of her statement hit him for the first time.

Eager to change the subject, and concerned he was turning red, he spoke up as he moved his eyes back to his computer screen. “Still on to come with me this morning?”

“Yep. I’ll meet you in the parking lot. I need to check on something before we go.”

“Alone?” Johnny asked.

“It’s just a subpoena for surveillance video on a homicide I picked up. Thanks, though.”

“See you then.” With that, Johnny was back in the database he was searching. Holly walked to her desk and got her day started.

At five minutes to ten, Holly was parking in front of headquarters when Johnny came out and got into her car. “Where to now?” Holly asked, looking at her watch.

“Gotta knock out the hardest interview we’ll have in this case.”

“Damn. How did she take your call?”

“Anna Dunlap is the polite woman I expected. Let’s just hope she’s patient, as well,” Johnny said.

Holly and Johnny drove the twelve miles out of town to pick up the interstate. As they headed south on I-75 toward the river, Johnny punched the street address into the GPS in Holly’s car.

“What did she say when you called her?”

“Well,” Johnny said, “she was much more gracious than I expected. She interrupted me after I introduced myself and asked me if I’d checked out Dunlap’s cold case file. When I said I had, she just told me to come by and ask her whatever I wanted. It was sad, really. She seemed to be just going through the motions.”

“Has everyone who checked out Dunlap’s file met with her?” Holly glanced over at Johnny.

“Not all, but most. Some were focused on associations, others on finances. I bet those were tough questions.”

“No doubt,” Holly agreed.
